IN SEASON: SEPTEMBER PRODUCE & RECIPE ROUNDUP

Heading to the farmer’s market? Here’s what to look for and how to prepare what’s in season now!

Lots of fruits & vegetables in season in September.

If I had to pick a favorite month for going for eating seasonally, I think I’d have to go with September (I still love you June!). There is just so much to choose from in September and there is this very interesting mash up of summer and autumn favorites.

Check out some of the recipes to make in September below!

KALE

Like most cruciferous vegetables, kale enjoys the cooler weather during the autumn months as too much heat can turn it bitter.

AUTUMN WHEAT BERRY SALAD

This is one of the magical salads that not only tastes great but can also be made in advance because, let’s face it, there’s nothing enjoyable about wilted salad greens. Nope, nada.

PEARS

I always feel a little bad for pears as apples seem to get most of the fall seasonal fruit appreciation. But don’t give up on pears! They are delicious in so many ways whether raw or cooked.

ASIAN PEAR, BEET & KALE SALAD WITH MISO VINAIGRETTE

If you were to think of fall in a salad, I think this would be it. A kale salad base topped with Asian pears that are crisp and sweet plus tender golden beets. A simple miso dressing tops it all off along with crunchy pumpkin seeds.

This Asian Pear, Beet and Kale Salad is perfect for those lingering warm, late summer days.

RADICCHIO

Radicchio is often sorely overlooked as just a little something you toss into your salad mix or use to garnish a plate. I’m here to tell you though that it’s SO much more with lovely bitter notes and a refreshing crunch.

CHARRED RADICCHIO WEDGES WITH PARMESAN YOGURT DRESSING

Bored with the same old, same old? Try this spin on a classic wedge salad by using radicchio in place of iceberg and - wait for it- lightly charring the leaves! It will change the way you think about this purple hued gem.
